Is LG’s Multi Blue Player A Full HD DVD Player?

Following LG Electronics’ release of the Super Multi Blue Blu-ray/HD DVD combi player come rumblings among members of the press that the player might not be a full HD DVD player. Scuttlebut has it that the player will not be compatible with HD DVD’s HDi interactivity layer, which is the logic layer that supports the cutting edge interactivity features that run in full motion with HD video.

It’s not known if the potential HDi issue is endemic to the dual-format Broadcom integrated circuit solution that’s used in the player or due to something else. If the Broadcom colution itself is at fault that would limit the appeal of any future dual-format players based on the solution.

The HD DVD camp has made a point at this show of demonstrating that even its first-gen players will be and are fully capable of taking advantage of the very latest in interactivity features, which could be why the group’s reaction to the LG player has been rather tame here. Look for UAV to follow this story and report further when we can get confirmation from LG one way or the other.
