Appleseed—Geneon

On the heels of global warfare, humanity attempts to resurrect what's left of its remaining survivors in Earth's last city, Olympus. In this artificial utopia, half of the population is made up of Bioroids—genetically engineered human clones. Void of any desire-driven emotions, they are meant to maintain balance among the human race. Olympus seems the idyllic urban paradise, but, below the surface, a group of human terrorists is secretly plotting to overthrow the government and restore all power to mankind. The survival of Olympus rests on Deunan Knute, a legendary female soldier who holds the key to Appleseed, a secret program created to save the Bioroid population.

The 1.85:1 anamorphic presentation of this DVD is excellent. The beautiful colors and picture quality are simply amazing. The innovative combination of traditional hand-drawn design and CG animation takes this art form to a new level. I have no complaints in the sound department, either. The Dolby Digital 5.1 isn't wasted, and, with such an excellent soundtrack, it makes for an exhilarating movie experience.

The special features are disappointing. As I watched the film, I wanted to know how they created such a phenomenal work of anime. However, no documentary on the film's creation was featured. Other extras include a director and producer's commentary track, staff profiles, previews, and more.

When I first heard about this novel approach to filmmaking, I was a bit skeptical. Appleseed has certainly restored my faith in animation technology, and this otaku can't wait to see what will come next.
