As Mark Twain (and other others) have noted, “There are lies, damn lies, and statistics.”

Blu-ray looks a zillion times better than DVD, right? Are all of those British viewers blind, or are we asking the wrong questions?

Blue Microphones is well known as a maker of - you guessed it - microphones. It’s been in that business for 20 years. It has more recently entered into the headphone market with the Mo-Fi powered headphones and has now debuted the Lola headphone.

As you might know, Blue Microphones makes microphones. Really good microphones, actually. The company also makes some darn nice headphones. The newest members of the family are Ella and Sadie, along with Satellite.

I have issues with Bluetooth. I see it as a force of nature, a veritable tsunami, against all that good sound quality stands for. That is because that oh-so-convenient wireless link limits functionality and degrades audio fidelity. Now, with the advent of the 5.0 spec, Bluetooth is poised to expand its dominance. But, the spec also has a glimmer of hope for us audiophiles.

You’ve seen the ad on TV. The little boy is playfully offered the keys to his dad’s Subaru. But then he imagines all the hassles of driving; stuck in traffic gridlock, he cries out in frustration, “You’re killing me!” That exactly describes my attitude toward the rise of Bluetooth headphones.

It’s a presidential election year in the United States (did you catch the debate last night?), and some of us are unhappy with our electoral choices. But things could be worse—much worse. Take the old Soviet Union, for example. Choices in this totalitarian state were extremely limited, to say the least. During elections, there was one name on the ballot, and the candidate received 99 percent of the vote. On the bright side, the comrades, at least the subversive ones, had bone records.

You probably saw the news reports last week. A lawsuit has been filed against Bose, alleging its Connect app, such as used with a Bose headphone, collects information on the listening habits of the user, without adequately informing the user of the full extent of the practice. The story was widely reported. The rebuttal by Bose was not so widely reported.

This is not your father's stereo - or your iPod. The Bose Lifestyle 38 combines elements of both and adds its own share of functionality and flexibility. The Lifestyle series has been a Bose mainstay for years, offering DVD playback with 5.1-channel surround sound in an attractive, easy-to-use package.

There is probably more diversity in the audio/video market than in the Amazon rainforest. Dealer's shelves (and Amazon.com's Web pages) are filled with a seemingly endless variety of DVD players, A/V receivers, speakers, and complete home theater systems.

The dancing robots and talking smart speakers get all the attention at CES, but there is still a strong showing of traditional audio products. They don't light up or take selfies. They just sound really good.
