Kaleidescape today introduced the Cinema One movie server, its first product designed for retail distribution. The $3,995 server provides storage and instant access to up to 100 high-definition Blu-ray or 600 DVD-quality movies. Until now, the company made products that were available only through custom installers.

Movie-server specialist Kaleidescape has signed on as the newest member of the 8K Association (8KA), a trade group that promotes standards and best practices for ultra-high-definition video. The move places the California-based company alongside display makers, chipset suppliers, and content providers working to accelerate an 8K ecosystem.

Kaleidescape announced the Mini Terra Prime movie server on November 18, the latest and most compact addition to its Terra Prime line. The solid-state unit provides 8TB of internal storage, enough for roughly 125 of Kaleidescape’s high-bitrate 4K movies, and is for system owners who need silent, rack-friendly expansion.

Kaleidescape, the Silicon Valley firm that introduced the first dedicated movie server in 2001, today announced a new 4K movie player that supports Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) and lossless audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The move addresses the criticism that previous players were limited to the static HDR10 format.
