After many years in plasma-manufacturing partnership, Fujitsu and Hitachi have agreed to change their relationship. Specifically, Hitachi will acquire Fujitsu's stock in Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP) as well as Fujitsu's plasma display panel (PDP) technology patents. Once both companies have provided financial assistance to eliminate FHP's excessive debt by the end of March, the stock transfer will proceed quickly, making FHP a consolidated subsidiary of Hitachi.

A two-day stop in San Francisco on Fujitsu's road show last week was enough time to let me scoot downtown and scope out the company's new Plasmavision 42 display. Jon Iverson and I were mighty impressed by it last month at the Consumer Electronics Show, where it was demonstrated under less-than-ideal conditions. This month, in a suite on the 35th floor of the ANA Hotel, the Plasmavision once again stood out as an exceptional feat of engineering.

High-definition programming will expand substantially this year, with the addition of up to three new full-time HD channels from pay-per-view-provider iN Demand. The announcement from the New York-based company was made April 28 by CEO Steve Brenner.

Headphone makers are really stepping up their game lately. A couple months ago it was Sennheiser’s Ambeo, a headset with 360-degree microphones built into its earpieces. Not to be outdone, startup Funky Sound Studio plans to introduce its take on the smart headphone next month at CES 2018.

Netflix streaming is projected to double and then some in the next three years, increasing from 8.6 billion hours in the first quarter of 2015 to between 14.3 billion and 21.8 billion hours by 2019, according to a report by MediaPost. This would catapult the popular streaming service from its current 6 percent share of “linear TV viewing” in the U.S. to between 12 and 22 percent based on estimates by MoffettNathanson Research.
