Two new satellites, 28 new digital broadcasting frequencies, and a new broadcast-operations center are among the trophies <A HREF="http://www.echostar.com/">EchoStar Communications Corporation</A> will take home in a stock-swap agreement with Rupert Murdoch's <A HREF="http://www.newscorp.com/">News Corporation</A> and <A HREF="http://www.mci.com/">MCI WorldCom</A>. The agreement with News Corp. brings litigation between the two companies to an end, and it is expected to substantially strengthen EchoStar's position as a leader in direct broadcast satellite (DBS). <A HREF="http://www.directv.com/">DirecTV</A> and <A HREF="http://www.ussb.com/">USSB</A> are the only other serious contenders in the North American DBS market.

I've spewed countless compliments upon this movie, or more accurately the DVD, in the print magazine over the past year, and like a good consumer my fondness eventually gives rise to the question, "What else can I BUY?" Not all of my favorite movies have Star Wars in the title, and some (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October) have yielded precious little tie-in merchandise, and so when an unusual product like the Old Century Master and Commander game is released, I am compelled to take note.

John Strohbeen is an audiophile through and through. In 1964, he founded the legendary Boston-born retailer Tech Hifi and after serving as president for 14 years, went to work for Ohm Acoustics where he has served as president and chief designer since 1978.

In a daylong event last week, THX Ltd. and LG Electronics brought a number of journalists to its San Mateo, California headquarters. The main feature was the showing of the documentary Camera Man: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff from independent filmmaker Craig McCall, but THX also took the opportunity to bring us up to date on its THX certification program, including its work with LG on the latter's LCD and plasma sets.

Last week, <A HREF="http://www.lucasfilm.com/">Lucasfilm THX</A> announced the availability of the first THX certified PCs under a newly created THX program that the company says is designed to deliver "the best picture and sound to date on a personal computer." A Lucasfilm press release states that "with consumers increasingly turning to the PC for entertainment content, a THX certified PC ensures that movies, music, games and more will be enjoyed with a sound and visual impact that will satisfy the most demanding multimedia user."
