Last week, <A HREF="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS</A> and <A HREF="http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com">Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America</A> (MDEA) announced that they have entered into an agreement by which MDEA will sponsor high definition coverage of the semi-finals and finals of the 2001 US Open Tennis Championships. It is the third consecutive year MDEA has sponsored CBS's HDTV coverage of the US Open. According to CBS, this year's coverage will feature the HD primetime broadcast of the Women's Final on Saturday evening, September 8.

Last week, <A HREF="http://www.ti.com/dlp">Texas Instruments</A> announced that its Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology has received the "Golden Note" award from <A HREF="http://www.avacademy.com">The Academy for Advancing High Performance Audio & Video</A>. The award recognizes DLP as "The Most Innovative Video Technology," and was received at the Academy's Award Banquet at the Indianapolis Westin Hotel.

Rumors of the demise of HDTV football may have been greatly exaggerated. <A HREF="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS</A> has announced that this year's Thanksgiving Day <A HREF="http://www.nfl.com/">NFL</A> game between the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions will be broadcast in 1080I HDTV. The digital broadcast, sponsored by <A HREF="http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/">Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America</A> (MDEA), will be produced separately from the standard NTSC version.

Over the next four weeks Toshiba is embarking on an aggressive promotional campaign for HD DVD, timed to coincide with this Tuesday's release of the blockbuster <I>Matrix</I> trilogy, one of the most anticipated franchises to hit either HD format. The campaign will feature in-store rebates for HD DVD players, and will also have HD DVD promo trailers running in movie theaters with this summer's hottest movies, including, in a heavy dose of irony, Sony's own <I>Spider-Man 3</I> (wonder if anyone at Sony or the Blu-ray Association is wondering why he didn't think of that).

The latest videogame based specifically on the most recent Arnold Schwarzenegger (who apparently recorded only a portion of his in-game dialogue) action sequel, Terminator 3: Redemption, is the first I've ever seen (and heard) to offer such a distinct hierarchy of audio formats across each of the three major consoles. (I'm a Home Theater guy, sadly this is one of the first details I look for on the package.)

The fifth generation of wireless technology, or 5G, holds the promise of blazing fast mobile Internet speeds that would make it possible to download a blockbuster movie in seconds. The technology is still in the developmental stage but England’s University of Surrey is working with tech companies to build the world’s first 5G network by 2018.
