At the Society for Information Display (SID) 2005 International Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition this week in Boston, MA, Samsung is highlighting a number of important developments. Their 82-inch LCD panel, the largest in the world, is being exhibited for the first time in the Americas. The prototype is said to have a horizontal and vertical viewing angle of 180º, reproduce 92% of the NTSC color gamut, and exhibit a response time of 8ms or less.

In the LCD vs. plasma competition, LCD has sold more sets overall, while plasma has dominated in some larger screen sizes. But plasma has given up that advantageous position in the latest numbers from Quixel Research, which show LCD selling more in the 40 inches and up categories for the first time.

It's no secret that LCD TVs are outselling plasma displays, but a new study by J.D. Power and Associates and Market Force Information have unearthed one clue as to why. And, apparently, those online ads for mystery shoppers aren't complete scams....

Liquid Crystal on Silicon or LCOS technology is clearly hot in the HDTV market. <A HREF="http://www.microdisplay.com">MicroDisplay Corporation</A> announced last week that it his introduced a single panel 1920 x 1080 LCOS microdisplay with resolution of two million pixels. The company says the new chip is designed for front and rear projection televisions.

LED backlighting for LCD displays has already surpassed CCFL backlighting in performance, energy efficiency, and overall hipness. And LED eventually will beat CCFL again in sheer numbers, predicts the Quarterly LED Backlight Report by DisplaySearch.
