The music industry is quietly grappling with a digital audio storage crisis that threatens to sweep away many of the musical achievements of the past few decades. The lack of usable masters or other elements is also throwing a spanner into the works of lucrative remasterings and reissues.
"When Harman, Datasat, BMW, Volvo, Pioneer, Arcam, Emotiva, Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus want digital audio optimization solutions, they turn to Dirac," boasted a sign at the Dirac exhibit. But the demo was not of the Swedish company's world-beating room correction systems but of a newly developed system to enhance headphone listening for virtual reality and gaming.
Director Steven Soderbergh is mad. And he has every right to be. His work is being deliberately butchered for television. This was once routine in a world where widescreen films had to fit onto a 4:3 screen. Twenty-three film directors have signed an open letter condemning DirecTV's Home Premiere video on demand scheme, which would make movies available on satellite video on demand 60 days after their theatrical runs.
Home Premiere "cannibalizes theatrical ticket sales," said the letter, which was published online by the National Association of Theater Owners and as an ad in Variety. The letter is aimed at four studios who have embraced the DirecTV plan including Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century-Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros.
Just bought a new 3DTV, DirecTV subscribers? Then some of you will be glad to hear that an upgrade to your set-top box will bring 3D channels to your satellite feed. Unfortunately this applies only to newer STBs, so other subscribers will need to replace the box altogether to get 3D.
DirecTV subscribers who buy premium channels are in for a pair of new treats. They've gotten HBO Go and MAX GO, allowing instant access to a broad array of HBO shows and Cinemax movies.
On the HBO GO side, that means every episode of every season of selected shows. The service will launch with 1400+ titles from old favorites like The Sopranos to the new Game of Thrones. A Season Pass offers alerts to favorite programs.
Recent machinations in the ownership of DirecTV may culiminate in the satellite operator being sold to one of the major telephone companies, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei has told the Associated Press.
AT&T-owned DirecTV is launching its own video streaming service. It will use both home and mobile broadband networks to reach smart TVs, tablets, phones, PCs, and streaming devices. Unlike DirecTV satellite service, it won’t require an annual contract, set-top box, or dish installation.
