One of the most significant pieces of the transition from analog to digital TV broadcasting fell into place with the recent announcement that major retail chains would carry the set-top boxes necessary to keep analog sets from going dark.

Hot off the presses, in a move anticipated for some time, Reuters is reporting that Warner will support only Blu-ray Disc starting in June of 2008. This move leaves only Universal and Paramount supporting HD DVD and has the obvious potential to finally end the destructive format war between Blu-ray Disc and its rival HD DVD once and for all.

Source Interlink Media today announced the promotion of Shane Buettner to Editor-in-Chief, Home Theater Magazine, replacing Maureen Jenson who left the company. Buettner began his career with Source Interlink Media's High Tech Group in 2005 as Buyer's Guide Editor for UltimateAVmag.com and HomeTheaterMag.com. He became online editor for those properties in January 2007 and directed their editorial strategy.

Universal Pictures and Vudu made high-definition history with The Bourne Ultimatum on December 11. The Matt Damon vehicle is the first major movie to be released at the same moment online, on DVD, and on HD DVD. The online version will be in high-def, placing it in direct competition with the HD DVD.

Hopes for a disc that would play in either HD DVD or Blu-ray players died a few weeks ago when Warner suspended plans to market what it had called a Total HD disc.

Here's the good news: The DVD Forum has approved a new triple-layer HD DVD with capacity of 51 gigabytes. Now here's the bad news: It remains uncertain whether the new disc will play on existing HD DVD hardware.
