SVS, Klipsch, LG, and others get the BF party started.

LG got Black Friday sales rolling a week ago when it announced its “Best Prices” of 2018 sale, and momentum continues to build this week as companies decide to get the Black Friday party started now rather than wait until after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday, the once-official kick-off to holiday shopping, is a week away yet the deals are already in full swing and have been for quite some time (“Black Friday in July” anyone?) as retailers get a jump on holiday selling and wary shoppers scramble to grab must-have gifts. Only a handful of companies reached out to us with early BF deals so we scoured the web to see what kind of deals we could find. Here’s a sampling of what we found…

Okay, so Black Friday ain’t quite what it used to be but there are still plenty of deals to be had, not only today but over the next few days. Here’s a look at some of the AV discounts we’ve come across.

Forget laptops and phones. Forget robot vacuums, instant pots and all that other stuff. Black Friday this year is all about A/V, and to drive home that point, the subwoofer maestros at SVS are selling their 1000 and 2000 Series models at historically low prices.

Comcast isn't the only service provider trying to make room for more high definition channels by compressing other channels into a smaller bandwidth footprint. It looks like they all do it, to some degree, though some carriers are better at masking...

It's hard to believe, but more iPod-related stuff is on the way. Soon to be available are kiddie cases from ifrogz, a company started by the same guys who developed Reminderband custom silicone bracelets. (And how many times haven't we all wondered how the world existed before those came along?) The new company's Tadpole line of video iPod cases are made specifically for children ages one and up - but they do not come with sedatives or tension relieving headache medicine for adults of child-rearing age.

St. Louis-based startup Blipcast demonstrated a product/app of the same name at CES 2016 that lets one or more person listen to audio from their TV via headphones connected to a smartphone.

The nation's biggest video rental chain and biggest movie club are reportedly discussing a merger. Blockbuster could join forces with Columbia House as a hedge against falling video rental revenue, according to mid-September reports in <I>The Wall Street Journal</I>, <I>The Hollywood Reporter</I>, and elsewhere.

Warren Lieberfarb's "sell through" agenda for DVD pricing has had some unintended consequences. The former head of Warner Home Entertainment pushed hard for an industry-wide pricing policy that made movies on DVD one of the greatest bargains in the history of entertainment. For compact disc prices, movie fans can own archival copies of films that cost tens of millions to produce&mdash;a strategy that has had serious consequences for the video rental business.
