For multi-room custom installations, Meridian is introducing the Media Core 600 audio server with two hot-swappable hard-drive bays, conveniently located in the front, and outputs for six independent zones, each including S/PDIF, SpeakerLink, and fixed and variable analog. The Media Core 600 replaces the Ensemble and eliminates the latency between zones playing the same content by slaving multiple zones to one clock. Even better, a new House Sync feature slaves multiple units to the same clock, eliminating latency in very large systems. Pricing and availability are to be determined.
The CEDIA nightlife got off to a grand start at the Georgia Aquarium Wednesday evening, where Meridian hosted a delightful party. A scuba diver greeted guests while gigantic whale sharks and other denizens of the deep slowly cruised by. The acrylic window that separated us from the fish measures 63 feet long by 27 feet high, and it's two feet thick to hold back 6.3 million gallons of artificial sea water.
Long scoffed at by audiophiles, music servers are now gaining widespread acceptance for their convenience and sound quality. Among the most highly regarded products in this category is Sooloos from British high-end stalwart Meridian, which just announced two new members of the Sooloos familythe Control 15 server and Media Source 600 client.
I just got back from seeing Disney/Pixar's <I>Up</I> in digital 3D. The movie itself is beautiful, both visually and conceptually. The story is charming yet poignant with lots of laughs, the voice actors—led by Ed Asner as the gruff Carl Fredricksen—are superb, and the animation is stunning. Interestingly, many of the animated items, even most of the dogs, are essentially photorealistic, but the humans are deliberate caricatures. I suspect Pixar goes this route because it's so difficult to animate truly realistic-looking people thanks to the exquisite human sensitivity to facial detail and body language. I have no problem with that, but I was disappointed in the 3D presentation for several reasons.
Most CD players and transports are relatively featureless, boring rectangular boxes, but not the Kalista from French boutique maker <A href="http://www.metronome-technologie.com">Metronome Technologie</A>. Distributed in the US by <A href="http://tmhaudio.com">TMH Audio</A>, the Kalista looks more like a modern sculpture, though it offers plenty of substance in addition to some serious style.
Here's an interesting item—a 3-channel, class-D integrated amp from a French company called Micromega and US distributor Audio Plus Services. The AP180 provides full HDMI audio decoding and 180Wpc for three speakers in a home-theater setup, all for $2500. To complete a 5-channel system, Audio Plus Services recommends pairing the AP180 with the PW400 ($2800), which provides 400Wpc of class-D power for the front right and left speakers while the AP180 powers the center and surrounds.
For the second year, Microsoft held a contest to find the best custom installation based on Windows Media Center technology. This year, the winner was cyberManor for its extensive whole-house installation in Silicon Valley. In what is sure to be a big boost for the HD DVD format, Microsoft and Toshiba announced on Monday that they have formed a partnership to co-develop HD DVD players among other joint activities. Now that unification talks with the Blu-ray camp seem to have completely stalled, this sets the stage for a rip-roaring battle royale with Sony, Apple Computer, and the other Blu-ray supporters.
Norway somehow seems an odd place to find a high-end projector manufacturer. Yet there in the town of Fredrikstad—founded in 1567 at the mouth of the Glomma River an hour's train ride south of Oslo—<A href="http://www.projectiondesign.com">Projectiondesign</A> not only designs and manufactures high-end DLP projectors under its own name, but also for companies like Christie, one of several providers of DLP projectors for the commercial digital-cinema market. Last year, the company introduced its <A href="http://www.avielo.com">Avielo</A> line, including the flagship Helios, which puts out enough light to compete with the midnight sun.

But if you think it's simply offering projectors and surround-sound systems, think again.
