Buy it once, play it on any device: That's the promise of UltraViolet, a cloud-based computing scheme. While the Consumer Electronics Show was in full swing this month, it was reported that UltraViolet is launching this summer.

As we've previously reported, this is a big deal. UltraViolet will let you access content you've paid for once across multiple platforms including TVs, PCs, gaming consoles, smart phones, and any kind of computer.

The digital TV rollout may have more problems than were previously anticipated. A study released July 25 by <A HREF="http://www.trivenidigital.com">Triveni Digital</A> indicates that a majority of the nation's digital broadcasts have transport stream errors that can cause reception problems ranging from "tuner lock-up" to audio sync errors. In addition, a July 26 report in the <I>Los Angeles Times</I> says that new content protection schemes could be incompatible with early generation high-definition TVs.

On June 17, <A HREF="http://www.unitymotion.com/unity/home.asp">Unity Motion</A> announced an agreement with <A HREF="http://www.turner.com/">Turner Engineering</A> under which Turner will supply high-definition television (HDTV) broadcast-engineering expertise to Unity Motion, which this year begins transmitting multiple channels of HDTV via satellite to subscribers in the US. In addition, Unity Motion announced that it will broadcast the first national satellite-based HDTV signal in the US on June 23-25.

Last week, <A HREF="http://www.cthv.com/">Columbia TriStar Home Video</A> (CTHV) and <A HREF="http://www.universalstudios.com">Universal Studios Home Video</A> (USHV) jointly announced an agreement to distribute USHV DVDs outside North America. According to the companies, the agreement represents a milestone in the international expansion of DVD. CTHV, the first major Hollywood studio to release films on DVD outside the US (i.e., in Europe, Latin America, and Japan), is now joined by USHV as one of the few major studios releasing its movies on a consistent basis internationally.
