I hate it when members of my family blame me when anything goes wrong with our home theater system. As if I'm some sort of geeky gear guy, they heap abuse upon me if the DVD player hiccups because of the greasy, fingerprint-smeared disc they carelessly slid in it. No sound from the satellite receiver? No picture on the TV? The remote control isn't working? They call me. (And why does it always seem to inconveniently happen when I'm resting regally on my porcelain throne?)

Beverages and movie-watching go together like, well, beverages and virtually any other activity. Beverages are just that great. You can keep a cube fridge in your home theater to ensure a frosty drink is always available, but that just seems so...

Integra's new NVS-7.7 Integrated Media Center is a multimedia PC that's specifically engineered for custom installed systems. The device is designed to make life easier for installers who want to include a Media Center PC in their clients' home entertainment systems. Unlike typical off-the-shelf Media Center PCs, the NVS-7.7 is said to be easier to set up, operate, and maintain. (That's a win for the customers and the installers.)

Anyone who has ever shopped for A/V equipment knows the pain of having to choose between two (or more) pieces of gear. Although each one may be almost exactly what you wanted, neither is 100 percent perfect in terms of features and performance. A new web-based build-to-order product configuration tool from Integra and Integra Research aims to eliminate such buying dilemmas.

Despite the down economy, one thing's up. Customer satisfaction with TV providers has improved markedly for all types. Telcos lead the list but satisfaction is also up for satellite and cable providers.

Seems like everybody's trying to cut down on your desktop clutter these days, paring down the collection of cables it takes to run all of your gear - and introducing new standards in the process.

Tablets Owners in Particular Show Stronger Ownership/Uusage for Just About Every Type of Tech

The technological world moves incredibly fast, with cutting edge trends sometimes getting pushed to the edge of the information and entertainment superhighway almost before the digital ink of their announcements has dried. Netbooks, for example, seemed to be the next big thing for a short time until falling victim to their own limited capabilities. E-readers have faced speculation that they may follow a similar trend, though the jury is still out on this category, with 17 percent of U.S. adults owning one.

In fact, adopters of new technology appear reluctant to let go of the old technology their new devices threaten to replace.

Two recent surveys have come to different conclusions on whether or not American consumers are abandoning cable in favor of Web-based on-demand and streaming media.

So you’ve decided to ditch cable and replace it with a number of carefully selected subscriptions to streaming services. But you’re finding it’s not all that easy. In fact, it’s a pain...

The annual shopping extravaganza continues with Cyber Monday and continuing Black Friday deals.
SV Staff  |  Nov 26, 2018
Black Friday has come and gone and early reports indicate it was a record-breaker — not for in-store sales, which were down slightly compared with 2017, but for online purchases. That consumers took to their phones on Black Friday to the tune of $6.2 billion bodes well for today — Cyber Monday. If the pundits at Adobe Analytics are correct, U.S. consumers will buy a record breaking $7.8 billion worth of goods online today. Will you be one of them?

The audio wing of the consumer electronics industry has seen a spate of realignments over the past few years. D&M Holdings is the latest player to change ownership. The public company will likely go private, following a tender offer by Bain Capital.

Late last week, D&M Holdings and Boston Acoustics announced that they have signed a definitive merger agreement in which D&M will purchase Boston Acoustics for $17.50 per share in cash for a total of approximately $76 million. The deal adds Boston Acoustics' premium speaker line (along with the Snell brand, which BA acquired within the last couple of years) to D&M's already impressive portfolio, including Denon, Marantz, and McIntosh, as well as the D&M Professional, ReplayTV, Rio, and Escient brands.

When acquisition talk gets started, you never know whether it'll result in a sale, but there's talk of two major realignments in the consumer electronics industry. First of all, D&M Holdings may be on the block. And second, Blockbuster is thinking of buying Circuit City. Whew! Someone get me a handkerchief.
