The latest cloud-based content initiative comes from Amazon. Its Cloud Player will enable users to store their music libraries on the web and access them from broadband-connected computers or Android devices.

"Now," says Bill Carr, Amazon's veep for movies and music, "whether at work, home, or on the go, customers can buy music from Amazon MP3, store it in the cloud and play it anywhere."

Net loss: Video vendor Hollywood Entertainment Corporation would be doing well if it weren't for its publicly traded online operation <A HREF="http://www.reel.com/">Reel.com</A>, which just can't make a profit no matter how hard it tries. The nation's second-largest video rental chain, <A HREF="http://www.hollywoodvideo.com/">Hollywood Video</A> enjoyed strong growth last year but was driven into the red by losses incurred by the Internet business, which reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $21.7 million.

Monster Cable had a lot to discuss at the CEA Line Shows in New York today. First and foremost was the world's first THX-certified HDMI cables, which meet or exceed the new HDMI 1.4 spec's bandwidth rating of 10.2Gbps as measured by Simplay Labs.

Just a week after a consortium of electronics companies announced its commitment to a new <A HREF="http://www.guidetohometheater.com/shownews.cgi?1228">high-capacity DVD</A>, the DVD Forum voted to approve the use of low-bit-rate compression for high-definition DVD. The vote was approved by 11 of the Forum's 17 members, with Matsushita, JVC, and Philips abstaining.
