No, that's not a demo for in-wall or car speakers, that's a finished iPod speaker dock. It's the iHome iP1, the company's new flagship iPod speaker system. iHome showed it off last night at a press event on Manhattan's west side, where it capped...

Starting from Scratch
I have a family room that measures 16x25 feet, and I intend to install a projection home theater with a good, affordable sound system. My budget is about $8000. What do you suggest for the projector, receiver, and speakers?

When constructing a home theater, the first thing I recommend is cooperation from your spouse. She had (and still does) complete veto power over every single decision that went into the development of this theater. I first had to convince her to turn a spare bedroom in our brand new townhouse into a dedicated home theater. However, what probably took more persuasion was convincing her of the importance to paint the room an unusually dark color such as charcoal grey with black trim. Or painting the connecting hallway Hollywood red, or the third bathroom metallic gold. Of course, the idea of having "exit" signs all about and life size busts of pretty ugly Hollywood characters took some hard selling, too.

Bay Audio's HomeBase Sub makes sure that sound by the poolside is just as robust and detailed as your in-home sound system. The underground HomeBase sub is rated down to 24Hz, providing concert-level bass with an output up to 90db at 100 feet away.

Cameras have steadily become more and more integrated into home entertainment over the last few years. With big screens video support, often in high-def, and television outputs, it's become easy for point-and-shoot camera users to share their photos...

I have a confession to make. I don't watch Lost. I love nearly every other sci-fi show out there, but I never got into the show. I might give it another chance, now that it's available on by Xbox 360. Netflix has just released seasons 1-4 of Lost...

The two largest trade shows in the audio/video world are shrinking--just a bit. Since they've grown pretty large and unwieldy over the past several years, a little backtracking is not necessarily a sky-is-falling proposition.

Home Theater Comfort Food

On my first trip to London, when I was much younger, my first meal was a mediocre steak in a fifth-rate restaurant full of reveling Australian soccer fans. It was one of the most disappointing meals I’ve ever had. While Britain doesn’t exactly lead the world in cuisine, you can eat well there if you know what you’re doing. The reason I got stuck with a leathery, tasteless, uninspiring piece of meat was that I was jet-lagged and desperately hungry, I didn’t know my way around, and I couldn’t find anything better. HTIBs can be like that. People who might be better served by a higher-quality component system settle for a less fulfilling one because they don’t know their way around the labyrinthine world of A/V receivers and speaker systems. Mixing and matching surround gear can be too steep a hill to climb.

Lord of the Ring

Sometimes a single moment of greatness defines a person or a company, even if other moments of greatness follow. For Judy Garland, it was “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz. For Acoustic Energy, a British loudspeaker brand, it was the AE1. The monitor took recording studios by storm when it made its debut in 1988, and it soon became a favorite among consumer-level audiophiles as well.
