Jon Davison called him “the Jimi Hendrix of the Bass Guitar.” Perfect. It had been years since I listened to Fragile but on a recent cross-country road trip I hit play and reveled in this remarkable work, struck once again by the complex, driving bass lines that defined the sound of Yes. Chris Squire was unique and is irreplaceable. I can’t imagine the band—in any form—going on without him.

Yes fan or not, find time to sit down and listen to Fragile as a complete work, from start to finish, on a good system. Play it loud. Be inspired. R.I.P, Chris.

LG Electronic’s organic light emitting diode (OLED) technology has taken the top spot at Value Electronic’s annual HDTV shootout for the second year in a row.

The event, now 11 years running and typically held at Value’s Scarsdale, NY retail outlet, puts each year’s most advanced displays against one another in controlled conditions and asks attendees to vote on different aspects of the contenders’ image quality. This year’s Shootout was held in New York City as part of the CE Week trade event, with show attendees participating in a series of 1.5 hour presentations over the course of two days.

If the advent of Dolby Atmos in home surround gear has pricked up your ears, you may be interested to hear that object-oriented surround will also be part of the forthcoming ATSC 3.0 broadcast TV standard. That doesn’t mean Atmos itself is hitting the airwaves. Instead, other surround encoding systems will be tested this summer from Dolby, DTS, and a consortium of other companies.

Amazon announced that episodes of its original series will be available in high dynamic range (HDR) format at no additional cost to its Prime members starting with the debut season of Mozart in the Jungle. Netflix was expected to be the first content provider to deliver HDR content before Amazon’s surprise announcement.

LG announced four new LED projectors that range in price from $350 to $1,000. The lineup includes one high-definition model and three portable Minibeam projectors, all rated for 30,000 hours, which equates to eight hours a day for 10 years.

When it comes to buying AV gear for the household, 99 percent of the respondents to last week’s survey said they make all or most of the decisions. The results were evenly spit between those who “make most AV buying decisions…but consult my spouse/significant other” (42 percent) and those who “make all AV buying decisions…without consulting my spouse/significant other” (40 percent). Only 17 percent said they consult their significant other "before purchasing any new AV gear." Here are the complete results...

Company founder Dan Laufman has announced that, after 11 years online, the brand will move into select brick-and-mortar specialty retailers, with somewhere between 30 and 50 dealers signed before the end of this year.

Jeff Bezos—movie mogul? Don’t be surprised if the next movie you see at the local cineplex was bankrolled by Amazon. Says Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios: “Our goal is to create close to 12 movies a year with production starting later this year.” Amazon’s Original Movies would be exhibited in theaters before moving on to Prime Instant Video. Of course, Amazon has already produced content for the small screen, including a couple of dozen pilots and eight series, most recently including Bosch, an L.A. crime drama based on the bestselling novels of Michael Connelly.

We caught up with Vince Pizzica, senior executive vice president of strategy at Technicolor, to find out what makes the UHD Alliance tick.
