According to a report today from NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, Toshiba has decided to stop production of HD DVD players. The company said it would continue to sell its current products, but there will be no further development, and its related factories in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan will be closed. Market analysts expect the company to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

In 1975, Meir Mordechai had a dream—to create the perfect speaker. Since then, his Israeli company, Morel (short for Mordechai Electronics), has developed a wide variety of innovative drivers as well as finished speakers. Its latest flagship is the Fat Lady, named in reference to the famous saying, "It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings."

In what must be considered a major victory for consumers, on May 6, 2005, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in favor of the American Library Association and others who filed suit against the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to block implementation of the so-called "broadcast flag," a digital signature that would have severely limited the circumstances under which consumers could copy DTV programs. As a result, over-the-air DTV signals may be freely recorded and copied for personal, non-commercial purposes as outlined by the principles of fair use (as unclear as those principles may be).

On Tuesday evening, I attended a panel discussion on the future of 3D for cable and TV presented by iHollywood Forum to coincide with the NCTA (National Cable & Telecommunication Association) 2010 convention in Los Angeles. Also on hand were several demos, including Panasonic's VT25 3D TV and a super-cool 3D camera rig (pictured above), which I'll get to later.

When home theater enthusiasts talk about their audio systems, they usually concentrate on components such as the disc player, receiver (or preamp-processor and power amps), and speakers. But there's another component that deserves just as much attention: the cables that connect the other devices together. Without cables, those other components would be nothing more than expensive boat anchors.

Italian projector maker SIM2 specializes in combining high style and high performance, especially when it comes to the high end. The company's C3X Lumis HOST 1080p projector is a perfect case in point—curvaceous cabinet on the outside and 3-chip DLP imaging engine on the inside.

Once again, I am very gratified at the thoughtful responses to last week's blog that were posted here and e-mailed to me. Clearly, UAV has many intelligent, articulate readers, and I thank you for sharing your insights, which will help me select the best products to review. Instead of posting inline replies to the comments left during the week (sadly, an activity I don't often have time for), I'll summarize my thoughts here, partly so I can devote some undivided attention to them and partly in the hopes that the discussion will continue...

Here's a question from Rich McGready that echoes a common theme I hear repeated over and over by TV shoppers:

First, I'd like to thank all of you who responded to my query of last week. I got more than 30 replies that expressed a wide range of opinions on what products UAV should review—not only specific products, but types of products, price ranges, and other criteria. Here's a summary and a follow-up question...

It's been two weeks since I asked readers to weigh in on whether they want more audio reviews with no objective measurements or fewer reviews with measurements. I've received 58 responses so far—thanks to everyone who expressed their opinion! Many of you supported your position with additional thoughts—in fact, a rather lively debate appeared in the comments section of that blog, which offers some entertaining reading.
