Netflix distributes a huge amount of video programming and a rapidly increasing percentage of it via streaming. But in the race for hot new titles, it tends to lag behind cable/satellite VOD and disc release. Now Netflix is looking to improve its game by licensing original content and streaming it ahead of competitors.

The first property Netflix is eyeing is House of Cards, a remake of a BBC thriller of the same name, this time starring Kevin Spacey and directed by David Fincher, who directed The Social Network. Netflix is bidding $100 million for two seasons of the series in the hope that it may do for Netflix what The Sopranos did for HBO and Mad Men did for AMC.

‘Tis that time of the year when all the big TV makers start shipping their new lines to retail, which means members of the press get to see them up close for what amounts to the second time, the first being January’s CES. No surprise that the star of the show at LG Electronic’s New York press conference this week was the 65EG9600, the company’s new 65-inch Ultra HD-resolution OLED.

Last Thursday, Ken Florance, Director of Content Delivery at Netflix, posted the results of a very interesting study on the Netflix Tech Blog. According to Hacking Netflix, users (not me, sadly) are getting e-mail surveys asking if they would be willing to pay an extra $10 a month to watch a selection of movies and original shows from HBO. It goes on to list most of the network's most...

News from the Netflix Investor Day was quite interesting. The CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings, said that the DVD-by-mail business will peak in as soon as five years. What? That's not going to inspire confidence in investors, will it? Good news for...

With only less than 10% of subscribers ordering Blu-ray Discs, Netflix is saying that Blu-ray won't have a big effect on their sales, believing that it will continue shipping DVDs for the next 10 years. Wow. That's pretty bleak if you're a Blu-ray...

Netflix regards streaming as a major component of its future survival when online delivery eventually takes over from disc rentals. But until now, Netflix streaming has been limited to 720p resolution. That's high-def but not the highest-def. And so Netflix streamers' hearts were glad when a report slipped out that Netflix was about to go 1080p. Unfortunately that report has since been retracted.
