In case you haven’t noticed, live streaming has replaced concerts as the new normal and, though, it may not be ideal (what is these days?), it provides an intimate glimpse of artists performing at home without the grandeur of a live show with its pulsating lights and smoke machines.

Successive Thursday night offerings in December of live musicals to the home were as different as could be: The Wiz featured a big cast and attracted an audience of millions through its broadcast on NBC; Daddy Long Legs was performed by two actors and seen by thousands via the Internet. Yet it was Daddy that made history as the first off-Broadway show streamed live from New York.

One-third of viewers casting around for something to watch still make live TV their first port of call, said a Hub Entertainment study. However, that’s down from 50 percent in 2013, and Netflix is making inroads among younger viewers. Millennials prefer live TV to Netflix by just 33 to 31 percent. In the ongoing battle between small-dish satellite and cable, the ability to broadcast local channels was a decided advantage for the wired approach. But the direct broadcast satellite (DBS) companies <A HREF="http://www.guidetohometheater.com/shownews.cgi?582">successfully petitioned</A> the FCC for the right to carry local stations on their system; early in December a federal appeals court ruled that they must carry "<A HREF="http://www.guidetohometheater.com/shownews.cgi?1171">all or none</A>" of those stations to comply.

First there was the TV, and we saw that it was good. Then came cable and satellite, and we saw that it made TV better. Some years later, the digital video recorder (DVR) was born, and those who fell under its spell knew that it was as close to an electronic gift from God as was humanly possible. But now the sun is shining on the Slingbox, a device that, as the name suggests, slings TV (or other media) from your living room to locations far and wide; and - short of having a Digital TV tuner with a high-capacity DVR hardwired directly to your brain - this could be the best thing to happen to TV since, well, TV itself came along.
