AT&T-owned DirecTV is launching its own video streaming service. It will use both home and mobile broadband networks to reach smart TVs, tablets, phones, PCs, and streaming devices. Unlike DirecTV satellite service, it won’t require an annual contract, set-top box, or dish installation.

The good news is that DirecTV is becoming the first pay-TV operator to offer Ultra HD programming. The bad news is that so far, the effort is limited to Samsung TVs, and programming to live events and 30 movies from Paramount and K2 Communications. You’ll also need a Genie HD DVR with broadband connection. The recently launched Ariane 5 satellite is the key to DirecTV’s UHD operation, along with a new slice of satellite spectrum. The satellite also provides additional local HD programming. DirecTV will soon have company, with Comcast preparing a UHD launch.

Direct satellite broadcaster DirecTV is making an aggressive move with live high-definition coverage of National Basketball Association games this season. Following transmission of the first NBA All Star game in HDTV Sunday, February 9, DirecTV, and the NY Knicks/LA Lakers game February 16, DirecTV will produce several more live NBA games in HDTV.

The near future looks mighty promising for HDTV fans. On September 8, <A HREF="http://www.directv.com">DirecTV</A> announced an ambitious plan to launch its next generation of satellites, a move that could dramatically expand the availability of high-definition programming. The development comes in the wake of DirecTV's acquisition earlier this year by News Corp., which now owns an 82% stake in the direct broadcast satellite operator.

A satellite receiver with programmable recording capability is now available nationwide from <A HREF="http://www.directv.com/">DirecTV</A>. The result of a four-way collaboration among the direct broadcast satellite service, hard disk recording pioneer <A HREF="http://www.tivo.com/">TiVo, Inc.</A>, Philips Electronics, and Sony Electronics, the DirecTV Receiver with TiVo technology allows consumers to select, record, and time-shift programming selected from among DirecTV's more than 225 channels, according to a November 2 press release.
