The digital sky has been falling for the last several days with reports that the AACS (Advanced Access Content System) copy protection scheme that will be used by both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD will allow content providers the option of down-converting HD signals from the analog outputs of the players.

In an effort to take the wind out of the sales of the HD DVD promotional armada heading to retail stores this month, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE), MGM Home Entertainment, and Lionsgate announced they're targeting May 23rd of this year to deliver the first batch of Blu-ray Disc (BD) titles at retail.

After Nielsen Videoscan sales numbers showed Blu-ray outselling HD DVD by a two-to-one margin in January, Sony up and declared the format war as over. February's sales data probably isn't going to do much to reign in the confidence of the Blu-ray camp. A Video Business article cited industry sources claiming that the Sony-backed format outsold HD DVD by two-to-one again in February: 250,000 units to 125,000 units.

While you hear a lot about movie studios doing everything in their power to prevent illegal pirated copies, a new approach is emerging. Instead of fighting it, some Blu-rays come bundled with a DVD that contains Digital Copy versions of the movies....

If you've been wanting to expand your library of Blu-ray discs but are put off by their high prices, now's a good time to stock up. From March 9 through March 22, Amazon is reducing the price on over 300 Blu-ray titles (roughly a third of the entire Blu-ray catalog), including Iron Man, Transformers, and WALL-E; for a complete list of titles on sale, click here. A few titles are under $10, but most are $10 to $20, representing an average savings of around 50 percent over regular Blu-ray price tags. I'm so there!

Blu-ray disc production is up sharply over the past year. Within four more years it is expected to rise to billions of units.

Futuresource, a research firm, says that BD production is likely to hit 400 million discs in 2010, a 60 percent increase from 2009. By 2014, two billion discs are likely to be shipped worldwide.

The analysts say growing ownership of players and falling disc prices have both played a role in Blu-ray's current growth. They say 3D is likely to give it an additional boost. In particular, the expiration of Panasonic's Avatar exclusive in February 2012 will give the format a shot in the arm.

If you happened to pick up  I Am Legend the first time it was released on Blu-ray, you might want dump it on eBay while you're waiting for this. Really, or just toss it. Warner Bros. announced the Ultimate Collector's Edition of I Am Legend...
