A satellite receiver with programmable recording capability is now available nationwide from <A HREF="http://www.directv.com/">DirecTV</A>. The result of a four-way collaboration among the direct broadcast satellite service, hard disk recording pioneer <A HREF="http://www.tivo.com/">TiVo, Inc.</A>, Philips Electronics, and Sony Electronics, the DirecTV Receiver with TiVo technology allows consumers to select, record, and time-shift programming selected from among DirecTV's more than 225 channels, according to a November 2 press release.
Less than seven years after putting its first satellite in position, <A HREF="http://www.directv.com">DirecTV</A> has signed its ten millionth subscriber. The El Sugundo, CA–based direct broadcast satellite service now claims ten percent of the US television market.

The network has been launched on HD platforms recently rolled out by EchoStar Communications on its Dish Network satellite TV service nationwide, AT&T Broadband's greater Chicago market (where plans are set to launch HDTV service later this summer), and in numerous other markets serviced by cable providers Charter and Cox.
EchoStar Communications Corporation will soon up the ante on its competitors. This summer, the company's <A HREF="http://www.dishnetwork.com">DISH Network</A> service will add two new high definition TV networks, HDNet and HDNet Movies, to its expanding roster of high-def programming.
The battle of the giants continued in late October as <A HREF="http://www.disney.com/">Walt Disney Company</A> filed another complaint with the <A HREF="http://www.fcc.gov/">Federal Communications Commission</A> over a proposed merger between Time Warner and America Online. This time, Disney is protesting that the companies will keep competitors from using AOL/TW-controlled interactive-TV services
Walt Disney Company's home entertainment division will expand its test marketing of self-destructing DVDs in Florida next month, according to an announcement from Los Angeles. In April, Buena Vista Home Entertainment plans to rollout the company's "EZ-D" disposable DVDs through retailers in Florida and other major markets in the Southwest.
Read it and weep, fans of open DVD: more than one million Divx discs have been sold since the official launch of the pay-per-view format on September 25, 1998. The magic number was reached over the weekend of February 20-21, according to an announcement released last week by <A HREF="http://www.divx.com/">Digital Video Express</A>.
