On April 13, <A HREF="http://www.warnerbros.com">Warner Bros. Home Video</A> announced a program intended to introduce the DVD to a new generation of movie fans. WB will bundle DVD players and discs for video dealers to rent to their customers. "The rapid growth of DVD now makes rental a viable business opportunity for rental retailers," says Thomas Lesinski, Warner Home Video senior vice president for marketing.

Apparently, that is the position of executives at <A HREF="http://www.warnerbros.com/">Warner Bros.</A>, who contrived to have digitally generated human figures inserted into an orgy scene in the controversial adult drama starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.

Warren Lieberfarb, head of <A HREF="http://www.warnerhomevideo.com">Warner Home Video</A>, thinks Hollywood just doesn't get it when it comes to DVD. In his view, the film industry is making a big mistake by continuing to support the rental market when the real bucks are in sales.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is looking carefully at the proposed acquisition of Hughes Electronics Corporation by Littleton, CO&ndash;based EchoStar Communications Corporation. Hughes is the parent company of EchoStar rival DirecTV. Voting shareholders of General Motors, Hughes' corporate overlord, approved the sale late last year. If the deal is approved, the two direct broadcast satellite (DBS) services could become one&mdash;and, with 17 million subscribers, one of the largest distributors of television programming in North America.

The Internet is "more than a marketing medium---it's a revenue stream," says <A HREF="http://www.newlinecinema.com/">New Line Cinema</A>'s Gordon Paddison, one of a growing army of Hollywood promoters who are using the Internet to build interest in current films as well as those that are about to be released. Paddison has run several promotions on <A HREF="http://www.yahoo.com/">Yahoo.com</A> that have lured thousands of customers into theaters to redeem coupons available only on the Web.

Later this year, <A HREF="http://www.zenith.com">Zenith Electronics Corporation</A> will launch the LG brand of premium electronics to complement its own brand name, according to an April 4 announcement. LG-branded products will be positioned above Zenith, with limited distribution of full-featured plasma displays, LCD TVs and digital set-top boxes. A letter to Zenith dealers went out simultaneously with the press release, informing them of impending developments. The LG name is derived from LG Electronics, Inc. (LGE), the Korean electronics giant that acquired Zenith in 1999.
