MGM Promises James Bond Special Editions on DVD

Last week, Variety reported that, in celebration of its 75th anniversary, MGM intends to re-release several James Bond classics spanning the last 37 years. The company says it will release 19 of its Bond films as special editions on DVD and VHS in three installments beginning on October 19 of this year, culminating with the DVD release of the newest Bond film, The World is Not Enough, by the end of 2000. The new film, staring Pierce Brosnan as Bond once again, is slated to hit theaters November 19, 1999, in time for the holiday season.

The first series will include: Tomorrow Never Dies, GoldenEye, Live and Let Die, Thunderball, For Your Eyes Only, Goldfinger, and License to Kill. Of these seven titles, only three have made it to DVD so far. Because MGM has already released two versions of Tomorrow Never Dies on DVD, the studio plans to re-release the latest version with new packaging.

Variety reports that the DVD editions will be the ones to have—they'll feature extras not found on the VHS versions, such as documentaries created especially for the DVD releases, commentaries, featurettes, storyboards, music videos, and trailers. MGM has revealed that the DVDs will be priced at $34.98, while VHS editions will cost $14.95. Complete sets of the seven pictures will retail for $199 on DVD, $89 on VHS.
