More Blu-ray Delays

Does the BD abbreviation stand for Blu-ray Disc or Blu-ray Delayed? The latest setback has Pioneer Elite's BDP-HD1 pushed back from July to September, while reports now have Sony's BDP-S1 sliding from July to August 15th. On the plus side, the Pioneer Elite player's price has officially dropped from $1800 to $1500.

Sony's "Missing Link" Receiver Gets the Blu's

Sony proudly announced the imminent birth of their newest STR-series receiver, a home theater gizmo Sony says is "the final link in the HD chain". The new STR-DG1000 is described as having 1080p pass-through, eight channels of uncompressed audio, smooth video switching, and a simplified surround sound set up with automatic adjustment. (Well, it's not totally automatic. You still have to hook up the microphone and push a button.)

They Aren't Blu-ray, But They Are Portable

Amidst all the hullabaloo about HD DVD and Blu-ray and HDMI and DRM and, well, all the other high-def disc stuff the world is buzzing about, Sony thought they'd squeeze a few more bucks out of the "old" DVD format by releasing a couple of portable DVD players that "offer cutting edge versatility and are designed to fit into any hectic, on-the-move lifestyle."

The Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) - the dudes who spend most of their working hours watching and selling movies and video games (man, what a life - it'a almost as devoid of real "work" as being an audio/video gear reviewer) - have released its nominations for the organization's 2006 Home Entertainment Awards. While some of the categories include such blockbusters as "Marketing Campaign of the Year", "Sell-through Title of the Year", and "Rental Title of the Year", others are likely to be of more interest to the average video junkie.

Tuesday's Warner HD DVD Releases

You wouldn't necessarily know it by looking at Amazon or bestbuy.com, but Warner Home Video is in fact releasing two more movies on HD DVD this Tuesday, May 23rd. Mel Brooks' comedy classic <I>Blazing Saddles</I> and the better-than-average Harrison Ford action flick <I>The Fugitive</I> are rolling into stores on Tuesday. Both HD DVDs are listed as having the same bonus features as the standard definition versions of each film, which in the case of <I>Blazing Saddles</I> is a 30th anniversary SE that's fairly loaded.

Microsoft's HD DVD Sidecar For The Xbox 360 Due For 2006 Holiday Season

The amount of news relevant to home theater enthusiasts that came from last week's E3 gaming trade show is striking evidence that whether we want it or not, some form of convergence is happening. As <I>UAV</I> <A HREF="http://ultimateavmag.com/news/051406ps3">reported earlier</A> , Sony announced pricing and availability for its eagerly anticipated PlayStation3 gaming console, and Microsoft followed suit in its own way by announcing that its HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 will be available in time for Christmas this year. Although no pricing or dates are yet established, the rumors are flying.

A New Angle on LCD Viewing

Limited viewing angles have always been the Achilles' heel of LCD flat panels when used as a TV or other video-viewing device. Gradually move off-center while looking at an LCD TV and, at some point, you'll begin to notice changes in the brightness and color of the image on the screen. Although there have been significant improvements over the years, Sanyo Epson Imaging Devices Corporation ("Sanyo Epson") thinks they've figured out a way to say "sayonara" to the problem once and for all.
