With DVD sales dipping, Best Buy is thinking of getting into the download business.

In a rough economic climate where many of its competitors are closing stores, Best Buy may downsize some of its stores, redirecting attention to online retailing.

That doesn't mean Best Buy is giving up on its brick-and-mortar stores, which allow consumers such niceties as salespeople and the ability to pick up items purchased online. But the store is reconsidering its square-footage requirements and "redefining the optimal big-box store size," CEO Brian Dunn said in a phone conference with analysts.

If you bought an HD DVD player or Xbox drive before February 23, here's some good news from Best Buy. You now have two options. You can keep your HD DVD player and the store will give you a $50 gift card to ease the pain. Or you can trade in your HD DVD player for further gift-card bounty.

Cloud-based storage is clearly the trend of the year. Best Buy is the latest company to offer a cloud music player, joining Amazon, Apple, and Google.

The Best Buy Music Cloud uses a PC or Mac application which scans your iTunes library (though this is not specifically an Apple-related service). Then it accepts music uploads and streams them to computers or mobile devices, the latter including iOS, Android, or BlackBerry. You can upload playlists as well as music files.

Blu-ray is Best Buy's "preferred format," the megachain said yesterday in a press release. Though HD DVD won't disappear from the shelves, the retailer will "prominently showcase" BD hard- and software in both brick-and-mortar and virtual stores.

Let's say you spot a bargain on the Best Buy website. You go to the local Best Buy to buy the product. Sorry, says the salesperson, that's not the correct price for that product. How can that be?, you ask. The salesperson boots up the site and shows you and then you feel like a ninny. But you're not a ninny--you've merely been robbed. Best Buy has confirmed to Connecticut state investigators that it maintains a second site, an intranet site, with different prices. I'll let "Consumer Watchdog" George Gombossy of the Hartford Courant tell the rest of the story: "State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal ordered the investigation into Best Buy's practices on Feb. 9 after my column disclosed the website and showed how employees at two Connecticut stores used it to deny customers a $150 discount on a computer advertised on BestBuy.com. Blumenthal said Wednesday that Best Buy has also confirmed to his office the existence of the intranet site, but has so far failed to give clear answers about its purpose and use. 'Their responses seem to raise as many questions as they answer,' Blumenthal said." Best Buy's serpentine response is to blame its employees: "We are reminding our employees how to access the external BestBuy.com web site to ensure customers are receiving the best possible product price."

Attention, stocking stuffers: Best Buy is stuffing its restocking fee. The elimination of the 15 percent fee for returned merchandise is a small victory for consumers as well as a boon to holiday shoppers who might be more willing to take chances.

Best Buy employees and customers had a major influence on some new Klipsch speakers, the Icon V Series. In fact, they helped design the speakers.

Best Buy Express is the name of a program that will put CE retail kiosks in airports. If you're waiting for a plane, would you like to buy a digital camera? Cell phone? Flash drive? Music player? Headphones, speakers, gaming portables? Surely a travel adapter or charger!

The LP has always had friends in high places. Apparently that includes someone at Best Buy, which is considering adding vinyl to all 1020 of its brick-and-mortar stores.
