ABC to Stream Free HD

Free HDTV are two words dear to the hearts of videophiles. We'll have a new source of it this summer when ABC launches a free online high-def channel at abc.com

The channel will go into beta testing in July. It will provide resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels, the same as ABC's broadcast signal. When the fall lineup goes on the air, you'll be able to view the new shows online. There will also be national news, local content, and "geo-targeting" of ads, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

ABC's broadband channel actually launched at sub-HD resolution last spring. Even in its current pre-HD version, it runs full screen. The upgrade will make it the first online high-def channel from a major network.
