TiVo and Blockbuster Team Up

TiVo and Blockbuster have announced that all models of TiVo DVR will carry Blockbuster OnDemand.

What's interesting about this--besides the obvious boon to TiVo owners who have, for some reason, a loyalty to Blockbuster--is that TiVo is already one of the several devices that supports Netflix's online service. Aside from PCs, this is the first time Blockbuster and Netflix have been available in the same hardware.

Blockbuster OnDemand will work with TiVo Series2, Series 3, HD, and HD XL. TiVo DVRs will be sold at Blockbuster's thousands of brick-and-mortar stores (which have already been doing a booming business in Blu-ray players and other hardware). And of course, the two companies will cross market one another. Look for the service to go online in the second half of this year.

The news comes as Blockbuster has been tottering. It is not Blockbuster's first online move--the company has also sold downloads through the 2Wire MediaPoint Player, and signed up with CinemaNow. See TiVo press release.
