YouTube to Explore Media Retailing

YouTube is getting into the media retail business. Soon the site that feeds video clips to millions will be selling music, movies, TV shows, games, books, and concert tickets.

Until now, the Google-owned site has subsisted on advertising. That brings in a mere $200 million a year. That would look fabulous on your checking-account statement or mine, but it's small change to Google, which pulls in $27 billion a year.

YouTube would have some advantages in the retail world. For instance, if you watch a music video clip, and really like it, what could be more natural than buying the DVD or CD? For downloads, YouTube would link to Amazon's MP3 store or iTunes.
