U.S. HDTV Adoption Increases

HDTV is booming. By how much, we're not sure.

Adoption has more than doubled since July 2007, according to Nielsen. The ratings firm pegs the number of HD households at 23.3 percent.

But wait. The Consumer Electronics Association (Word file), no slouch at statistics, says 30 percent of U.S. households had HDTV by mid-2007 and predicts 36 percent by the end of that year.

Another research firm, LRG, tells a different story. Its study found 34 percent of U.S. households have at least one HDTV, of whom 22 percent bought over the last year. That doubles 2006 figures.

Finally, 82 percent of U.S. households will have HDTV by 2010, according to Kagan Research. The average selling price is projected to drop 38 percent to $1139.
