Sony 4K Ultra Streaming Goes Live Monday

Starting Monday, owners of late model Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs will be able to stream 4K movies via the Ultra app included on those sets. Ultra is also the name for Sony’s new 4K streaming service.

The app will provide access to movies from the Sony Pictures Store, including those shot in high dynamic range (HDR).

Streaming 4K/HDR movies directly to your TV under the Sony plan will cost $30 a pop. Don’t have an Ultra-equipped Sony TV? Buy one this summer and you’ll get four free movies when you sign up for the service.

The Sony announcement did not include a comprehensive list of titles but said new releases such as Concussion, The Night Before, and The Walk will be included along with older “library” titles such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Ghostbusters.

The service is compatible with UltraViolet, allowing users to link their Ultra profiles to their cloud-based UltraViolet libraries for streaming. Sony said HD versions of select movies purchased through the Sony Pictures Store will be upgradable to 4K at a discount.

To Sony Corp: As Huey Freeman used to say on "The Boondocks", "Have you lost your damned mind?!"
From what I have read about how well many 4K TVs and A/V receivers can upconvert 1080P to 4K (with many reviewers saying it is difficult for some to see the difference between the native and the upconverted versions), Sony best keep dreaming. It's like when they won the HD disc format war with Blu-ray, and they thought they were going to get away with charging about $30-$35 dollars per disc. Yeah, that lasted about 27 minutes, until people told them to shove it.

I'm not sure how Sony can expect consumers to pay that much for streaming! A download that I own, that's UHD BD quality with WCG and HDR? Yes, but for streaming quality NO!

I'll wait for more UHD disk content to arrive.

Cheers,
