Redbox Refines Streaming Strategy

A little while ago we reported that Redbox was contemplating the launch of a streaming service to supplement its ubiquitous rental kiosks. No, the company still hasn't announced its streaming partner, but it has said a little more about its plans.

And it looks as though the strategy will be subscription, not a la carte.

Redbox president Mitch Lowe said as much in a conversation with analysts reported in the Los Angeles Times. "A single monthly fee would allow users to access movies on multiple devices and access discs through kiosks," the newspaper said.

The paper also bet its lunch money on Amazon as the "likely candidate" who will usher Redbox and its parent company, Coinstar, into the world of streaming.

Meanwhile, Redbox has also launched apps for the iPhone and Android, presumably to facilitate hard copy rentals. See press release.
