Netflix Announces 2016 “Recommended” TVs

Netflix has announced the first round of 2016 TVs to qualify for its updated, more stringent Netflix Recommended TV program.

Models in six series of LG TVs and three series of Sony TVs have met updated criteria, which according to a report in Variety “reduces the maximum time allowed to complete certain tasks” to the point where some of the TVs certified in 2015 would not make the cut in 2016.

The program was launched last year with the intention of pushing TV makers to improve smart TV user interfaces in ways that enhance the streaming experience. To carry the Netflix Recommended TV logo, a television must meet five of the following seven criteria:

  • TV instant on. The TV wakes and apps are ready to use right away.
  • TV resume. The TV wakes to the same place as when it was turned off.
  • Latest Netflix version with the newest features.
  • Fast app launch.
  • Fast app resume. Video resumes instantly when returning to Netflix from other apps or channels.
  • Netflix button on the remote control.
  • Easy Netflix icon access.
“Netflix approved” TVs from LG’s include models from the UH6300, UH6500, UH7500, UH8500, UH9500, and G6 series, while models in Sony’s X85D, X93D, and X94D series made the cut.
