HT Labs Measures: InFocus ScreenPlay 7200 DLP Projector

The top chart shows the gray scale of the ScreenPlay 7200 relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the 6500 color-temperature mode and the Film gamma mode, measures slightly cool across the gray scale. After upgrading to version 3.2 (from 2.5) of the internal software and making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale measures within 200 Kelvin of D6500, the accurate color temperature, across the entire range. This is an improvement compared with the performance before calibration. The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue six-segment color-filter wheel. Green (x=0.342, y=0.596) is slightly yellow, while red (x=0.654, y=0.325) and blue (x=0.146, y=0.058) are slightly oversaturated compared with those specified by SMPTE, which means that blue and red will be somewhat richer than specified. The light output was approximately 18.1 foot-lamberts on a 7.5-foot-wide 0.9-gain Grayhawk screen. The display has excellent DC restoration and a good color decoder. There was some slight bowing on the picture's edges due to the lens; however, when correctly set up, this was unnoticeable. The ScreenPlay 7200 displays out to the limits of the source with NTSC sources and, using our Leader LT-446 HD generator, is capable of resolving DTV signals out to the limits of its 1,280:720 chip.—GM
