Ditch That HDMI Dongle

Phones, tablets, computers, and cameras using the up-and-coming USB Type-C port won’t need a dongle or dock to convert the new standard’s DisplayPort video signals to HDMI.

HDMI Licensing, the arbiter of all things HDMI, has decreed that an HDMI Alternate Mode (or Alt Mode) for USB-C will allow HDMI video signals to travel through a USB-C cable with no muss or fuss.

However, Alt Mode is not backward compatible and applies only up to HDMI 1.4b—as opposed to the more video-hip 2.0a—so Ultra HD content would be limited to 30 frames per second and HDR would not be supported at all. But HDCP 2.2 DRM, ARC, HEC, CEC, Deep Color, and x.v.Color are supported.
