BackTalk: Sam Raimi Page 2

A lot of people feel you've just made the best comic-book movie ever.Wow. Actually, I'd have to give that award to Richard Donner's Superman . There are so many fine comic-book movies - I could never claim that honor.

Could you get inside the head of Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne the way you have with Peter Parker?Fortunately, they've got a brilliant director doing a new version of Superman right now. But if it wasn't for that, and if Richard Donner hadn't already made such a great movie, I'd love to.

Do you think a comic-book movie will ever win an Oscar for best picture?Gee, I don't know. The Oscars are held in such high regard and comic books, until very recently, have been looked down upon so dramatically. But thanks to the great work of the Marvel artists and writers, I think that perception is changing. People are starting to realize that comic books are actually a very worthy art form. It's just that comics came from such a low place that it's hard to change all at once an audience's perception of what they are. But they have very mature stories with intense and complex relationships.

Both of the Spider-Man movies show that you have a knack for romantic comedy. Will we ever see a Harry Met Sally from you?It takes a great director to pull off something like Harry Met Sally. They say comedy is really the toughest thing to do. Maybe when I can hone my craft a little, I'd attempt something like that.

Will there be a happy ending between Peter Parker and MJ?I can't tell you, because I don't quite know how it's going to end. It's like a real relationship for me. We're going to do our best to keep it on the positive, but they're going to have some rocky times ahead.

What's life like for you beyond Spider-Man?I couldn't think about anything except Spider-Man right now. It's such a big job and so important to me to get it right that I couldn't hold any other picture in my head.
