Wal-Mart Launches Free Streaming Service

Wal-Mart has added a free, ad-supported service to its Vudu streaming platform.

Vudu Movies On Us will make “thousands of movies and TV shows” available for free on-demand streaming in 1080p resolution with “limited commercials” and Dolby Digital sound when available.

The Movies on Us page currently lists about 240 titles, each labeled “free with ads” but does not include new releases or current TV series. Vudu said it will be expanding the library in the coming months.

“Millions of customers already buy and rent content on Vudu on a monthly basis,” said Jeremy Verba, vice president and general manager, Vudu. “This new service provides value for customers who want to watch movies and TV for free, when and how they wish to watch.”

The service is Vudu’s first free, high-definition streaming option. Vudu is accessible from the web and via a downloadable app for iOS and Android.

No Apple TV app, easy to do given they have an iOS app, and worse technically supports AirPlay but licensing issues make it useless. Sad, non-starter, another opportunity lost by VUDU. You had one chance to reintroduce yourself, and for this customer, you blew it.
