Take Me Out to the (4K) Ballgame

Today marks the first-ever live 4K Ultra HD telecast of a Major League Baseball game when the Giants meet the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles at 4:15 ET.

The game is the first of 25 games AT&T/DirecTV plans to broadcast in 4K this season. Upcoming games include the Cubs vs. the Cardinals on April 19 and the Yankees vs. the Red Sox on April 29 and 30.

To watch MLB in 4K you will need a subscription to DirecTV’s Ultimate or Premier package, a UHD TV that supports a minimum of 60 fps with an HDMI 2.0 compliant interface and HDCP 2.2 content security, and a 4K Genie Mini set-top box.

From a national perspective, perhaps, but, this is not the first 4K baseball broadcast. The Toronto Blue Jays, owned by Rogers Communications(a cable/media)company, started this past Tuesday(April 12) to broadcast ALL of their 81 home games in 4K resolution.

And have been broadcasting Raptor basketball games in 4K already. And hockey since January.

I spent money on a good tv for 4k, an evolution kit--containing latest encoding, cabling, 4k player,4k receiver, 4k media device, etc. and what I have found is that it is such a marginal gain unless one sits very, very close to a large tv. I sit 8.5 feet from my 75 inch 4k and notice a small difference which is worthwhile eventually, but nothing streams true 4k quality; however, I do think HDR is an excellent feature that should be what really compels individuals to buy newer technology.
