S&V Editors' Super Bowl XLI Picks

Mike Mettler, Editor-in-Chief (New Jersey) New Orleans Saints over Indianapolis Colts

One thing for sure you can say about the Super Bowl: It always looks GREAT in high-def. (I'll be watching it in my home theater on a plasma HDTV, BTW.) So who's gonna win? First, a few words about this weekend's Conference Championships. In the NFC game, the SCP (Sentimental Cinderella Pick) has to go to the New Orleans Saints. I really liked how they beat the Eagles on Saturday, though I thought Drew Brees' botched pitchout to Reggie Bush late in the game was going to spell disaster. And even though I have a soft spot for the Chicago Bears - after all, I spent my high-school years in Chicagoland, was a tried-and-true fan of Buddy Ryan's "46" defense, and totally loved Da Bears' crushing Super Bowl XX win over the Patriots - I don't think Rex Grossman and the gang will be able to stop the Big Easy boys' momentum on Sunday. I'll take the Saints by 4.

As for the AFC Indianapolis Colts - New England Patriots matchup, I'm gonna give the nod to the Colts, even though Peyton "The Endorsement King" Manning has essentially been missing in their first two playoff games. Good thing they've got the sure foot of Adam Vinatieri to back them up. True, it's hard to go against the sure arm and cool head of Pats QB Tom Brady, but it's the Colts' year to get to the big game. I'll take the Colts by 2.

So, back to the original question: Who's going to win Super Bowl XLI? Here's to the Cinderella Aints-No-More sticking her big toe in the Southern Florida gumbo in Dolphin Stadium and coming out victorious - I'm picking the Saints over the Colts, 28-23.

Tom Nousaine, Contributing Technical Editor (Michigan) Chicago Bears over Indianapolis Colts

I moved to Chicago in 1984 when "Da Coach" was bringing the Bears up to Super Bowl speed. That season was fun - as was the next one where they actually beat the pants off the opposition in the Super Bowl. But, frankly, I grew very tired of hearing "The Super Bowl Shuffle" everyday for the entire following year and was relieved when they lost in the first round of the playoffs. But now I live near Detroit, so I'm not afraid to root for the Bears again.

Daniel Kumin, Contributing Technical Editor (New Hampshire) New England Patriots over New Orleans Saints

The Patriots will win the stupor-bowl, 31-17, over New Orleans, in a triumph of intellect, discipline, and team-coaches-team mutual Koolaid-drinking over intrinsic talent and size.
