Soundcast Announces Waterproof Speaker

San Diego-based Soundcast today introduced the VG1 portable Bluetooth speaker ($150) featuring an IP67 “ingress protection” rating certifying that it’s impervious to dust and submersible in 3 feet of water.

The shockproof speaker weighs 1 pound and mates a pair of 2-inch aluminum-cone drivers with a weighted rear-firing bass radiator to produce “full-range” sound. It supports streaming via aptX and AAC codecs and has a minijack input for hard-wire hookups.

The rechargeable battery is good for up to 15 hours of playback and the VG1 will automatically remember and connect with up to six devices. Two VG1s can be connected for a wireless stereo experience. The speaker also has a built-in microphone and is compatible with Siri for hands-free control.

“We’ve spent a lot of time speaking with customers and studying this competitive market, and identified a need for a waterproof speaker that doesn’t sacrifice sound quality,” said Charity Hardwick, vice president of sales and marketing for Soundcast. “Applying Soundcast’s years of experience in design and engineering, we’ve created a beautiful and rugged portable high definition Bluetooth speaker that will be truly appreciated by the discerning ear.”
