Sony Introduces 4K Projectors

The VPL-VW600ES SXRD projector is Sony’s latest 4k home theater projector. It offers a full 4096 x 2160 resolution, a claimed peak brightness of 1700 ANSI lumens, and a stated 200,000:1 contrast ratio (with Sony’s dynamic Advanced Iris 3). Its HDMI 2.0 inputs will accept 4K sources at up to 60 frames per second.

The projector also includes the algorithm designed to get the best out of Sony’s “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray discs, an algorithm similar to that found in Sony’s most recent 4K LCD flat screen sets. The 3D transmitter is built-in. The projector will be available in November for $15,000, or $16,000 with Sony’s movie server and tablet controller (see below).

Sony’s VPL-VW1100ES 4K 3D projector, now $28,000, is an upgrade to last year’s VPL-VW1000ES. It includes HDMI 2.0 inputs (for support of sources up to and including 4K/60p), and the upconversion algorithm for Sony’s “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray discs.

Starting in October, for a price TBD, owners of last year’s VPL-VW1000ES may have the above upgrades installed in their projectors, an in-home service that will include Sony’s 4K UHD Media Player (FMP-X1), the Sony Xperia Z Tablet controller, and a new lamp.
