New Yamaha Subs Borrow Technology from Flagship

Yamaha today introduced two budget subwoofers that incorporate the proprietary “twisted flare port” technology used in the company’s $2,000 flagship model.

The flared and gently twisted shape of the port used in the NS-SW050 ($170) and NS-SW100 ($200) is said to evenly diffuse air flow through the port and reduce noise created by air turbulence, contributing to “clear and tight bass.”

Measuring 11.5 x 11.5 x 13.4 inches and weighing 18.7 pounds, the NS-SW050 has an 8-inch cone and a rated bandwidth of 28-200 Hz. The NS-SW100, which measures about 14 x 14 x 16 inches and weighs 26.5 pounds, has a 10-inch cone and a rated bandwidth of 25-180 Hz.

Common features include a 50 watt power amplifier (rated at 5 ohms, 10% THD) and a servo system that adjusts bass response dynamically to improve the accuracy and stability of the bass output.

The new models expand Yamaha’s growing line of subwoofers to 12 models, ranging in price from $100 to $2,000, 11 of which are priced at $500 or less.
