New Pioneer Headphone Includes Balanced Cable

Pioneer’s latest headphone has an unusual twist. The “Hi-Res-capable” SE-MHR5 ($300) includes a four-pole balanced 2.5mm cable in addition to a standard 3.5mm cable. The cable is designed to provide greater signal separation when used with an amplifier that has a balanced output.

In another design twist, the jack terminal is located outside of the earcup—to ensure the back chambers of the left and right earcups are equal in acoustic volume—and uses a twist-lock mechanism to keep the cable secure.

A foldable design with memory foam ear cushions, the SE-MHR5 has a dual-baffle back chamber said to better isolate noise, control the balance between the mid and low frequencies, and eliminate excess resonance.

The headphone is built around a “robust driver” with a lightweight copper-clad aluminum voice coil said to capture a wide 7Hz-50kHz frequency range. A travel pouch into which the headphone folds flat is included.
