NEAR Pounds the Ground with New Outdoor Sub

Maine-based NEAR, a pioneer in outdoor speakers known for building audiophile-quality speakers that can withstand extreme weather conditions, previewed a new “all environment” subwoofer designed to meet or exceed the stringent Mil-Std-810 military spec for resistance to humidity, salt air, water, and extreme heat and cold.

Dubbed IGS10, the subwoofer is intended for in-ground installation in landscaped areas, in which the top of the enclosure remains exposed, but it can be used “free standing” and hidden among planters and pots. The enclosure is made of a special “color-through” polyethylene that resists fading even after years of direct sun exposure.

At the heart of the IGS10 is a 10-inch inverted cone, metal diaphragm woofer featuring a Magnetic Liquid Suspension “spiderless” design said to lower distortion and improve bass output.

The IGS10 is slated for delivery in March 2015 at $1,199. It joins the 12-inch IGS12 subwoofer and three full-range models in NEAR’s IG (in-ground) series.
