Morel ships their balls of steel

Morel SoundSpotMorel is trying to make round the new square. In a world filled with rectangular, blocky speakers, the company is rolling out a set of sound-blasting spheroids. The SoundSpot MT 1 system uses a set of 60-watt spherical SP-1 satellites, each measuring just 4.3 inches around and weighing 2.3 pounds, coupled with a vaguely egg-shaped PSW8 100-watt, 8-inch subwoofer.

Each satellite features a remarkably thin (1 mm) stainless steel casing, protecting a 3 1/2-inch woofer, a half-inch dome tweeter, and a liquid-cooled voice coil. Because they're so small and light, they can be mounted on the walls, the ceiling, or set on nearly any flat surface like bookshelf speakers.

The company is shipping the SoundSpot MT 1 system now. The package includes 5 SP-1 satellites and a PSW8 subwoofer, and retails for $1,300. Morel will offer a beefier version of the system, the MT 2, later this year. The MT 2 will use the same subwoofer, but incorporate slightly larger SP-2 satellites with 4-inch woofers, and retail for $1,900.
