The Thomas Crown Affair—MGM (Blu-ray)

Movie: 3.5
Picture/Sound: 3.75/4.25
Extras: 2

Thrill-seeking billionaire Thomas Crown loves nothing more than courting disaster and winning! So when his world becomes too stiflingly safe, he pulls off his boldest stunt ever: stealing a priceless painting in broad daylight from one of Manhattan's most heavily guarded museums. But his post-heist excitement soon pales beside an even greater challenge: Catherine Banning. A beautiful insurance investigator hired to retrieve the artwork; Catherine's every bit as intelligent, cunning and hungry for adventure as he is. And just when Thomas realizes he's finally met his match, she skillfully leads him into a daring game of cat and mouse that's more intoxicating and dangerous than anything either of them has ever experienced before.

While this is a film that didn’t need a remake McTiernan did a commendable job. Brosnan fit the part perfectly and Russo showed more than her talents in a role that brought her back into the Hollywood prime. This one has always been a lot of fun and I was glad to see it make its way to Blu.

The picture quality on this one is a bit of a tossup. For the most part it looks pretty good, but it does feel a bit over processed at times. Detail isn’t everything that it could be, but the picture does have some nice depth and cinematic quality. The soundtrack is a treat with nice range and surround effects. The musical selections also add a lot to the character of the film and really open up the main soundstage.

No extras on the Blu-ray but the included DVD copy has the supplements from the original DVD release including a feature commentary.

This is always a fun thriller with plenty to admire. The Blu-ray isn’t too shabby either though a bit sparse in the extras department.
