Before I was married, my mother would have given her right arm for me to wind up with someone like Jennifer Lopez (albeit, a Jewish version). Yet Monster-in-Law hinges on the unlikely conceit that a possessive mother would somehow find J-Lo unworthy of her son. Nonetheless, this is a flighty but forgettable comedy that marks Jane Fonda's return to the big screen after 15 years. This is clearly Fonda's show, and, as Viola Fields, the mother-in-law-to-be from hell, the Hollywood legend is one of two highlights. The other is Wanda Sykes, who chews up virtually every scene she's in as Viola's personal assistant.

Fonda graces the various featurettes, as well, no more so than in the aptly titled "Welcome Back, Jane Fonda!" That's joined by seven others, with such titles as "Vartan the Man" and "Keeping It Real With Jennifer." Each is nothing more than a love fest for the individual being highlighted. A group commentary track, hosted by director Robert Luketic and featuring several members of the crew is nuts and bolts all the way, despite the presence of Sykes, whom the director refers to as a rare comedic talent. Although this is a two-disc package, the extra content could have easily been squeezed onto disc one.

An eye-pleasing 2.35:1 anamorphic picture and unremarkable Digital Dolby 5.1 soundtrack round out the package. It's a chick flick all the way.
