Legion—Screen Gems (Blu-ray)

Movie: 3
Picture/Sound: 4/5
Extras: 4

When God loses faith in mankind, he sends his legion of angels to bring on the apocalypse. Humanity's only hope lies in a group of strangers trapped in a desert diner and the Archangel Michael.

This one was better than I was expecting, but still short of the mark of post apocalyptic action films. I loved some of the production values and imagery, but a lot of the story got bogged down in the rather lame drama between characters. It also is a bit heavy handed in its borrowing from other sci-fi films of the past, most notably The Terminator. Still, for a popcorn thriller it isn’t too shabby.

Sony delivers a great looking and sounding disc with this one. The special effects are pretty cool at times and the Blu-ray delivers a crisp image with plenty of detail and depth. Contrast levels are solid with great black levels and plenty of shadow detail. The DTS-HD Master Audio mix is quite aggressive with a very robust bottom end and plenty of spatial design. You’ll get some nice panning effects and plenty of surround activity with this one.

Extras include some production features as well as a picture-in-picture look at the film’s development with interviews and behind the scenes footage. A digital copy of the film is also included.

This is a pretty good popcorn film that will be easily forgettable after you’re done but fun while you’re on the ride. Sony continues to do great work with their A/V presentations making this an easy recommendation for a weekend rental.
