Hoodwinked—Vivendi

When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call; it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime.

Animation is typically pure eye candy on Blu-ray but this one’s age is showing. While it is CG animation based, the animation is on the crude side compared to most of the CG we’ve become accustomed to these past years. In fact, I would put it more in line with what we see from most CG cartoons in the afternoon. Dimension is a bit on the flat side but color rendition is good. Fine detail is decent, but the animation doesn’t lend itself to a very detailed look with simple rendering compared to most Hollywood animated features. The DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack fares well with decent dynamics and a pretty solid surround presence. The voice work is quite good and the imaging is dead on across the main channels.

Most of the extras are contained on the DVD of the film that is included with the Blu-ray. You get some deleted scenes, a commentary and a music video. The Blu-ray features a behind the scenes look at the film itself.

While the story is quite clever with good voice casting, the animation does distract. I guess we’ve been a bit jaded with all the rich CG animation from Pixar, Disney and Dreamworks. But if you can get past the simplicity of it, this is a fun story with some solid laughs.
